Buy Her Bag, Not Her Body

Last year, I kicked off 2012 with a shopping fast. This year, not so much. I can’t help it, I love shopping. Yet, I don’t need to be a mindless credit card-swiping zombie to satisfy my cravings. ‘Tis true! The Nomi Network is a nonprofit organization that provides consumers with an opportunity to shop for good: their mission is to provide training and jobs for women who were victims or are at risk for sex trafficking. The women are taught to sew and create beautiful and functional bags, which are sold through their online store. 100% of the proceeds are used to pay fair wages and provide further training for the women.

I picked up the Double Zip Sorn Bon Wallet in light blue.

Kim managed to nab this cute Quilted Cosmetic Case in light blue before it sold out.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of hearing Alissa Moore, vice-president and co-founder of the Nomi Network, speak about her passion for this cause. I got a chance to speak to her afterwards and she was so sweet and inspiring. I can’t imagine the amount of faith and strength it requires to face something as pervasive and prevalent as sex trafficking head-on. This is an issue that I’ve avoided. Who wants to think about women who are bought and sold as commodities? Certainly not complacent, comfortable me.

Life has been good in the Capitol.

But there was no way I could continue to be an ignorant consumer after hearing Alissa’s moving story.

Check out their blog here. Happy shopping! ;-)

Shoutout to Eva Longoria

It seems that Eva Longoria was impulse-tweeting during the second presidential debate. She re-tweeted: “I have no idea why any woman/minority can vote for Romney. You have to be stupid to vote for such a racist/misogynistic twat.”

Kind of awesome, right? I completely agree. Any woman or minority who votes for Romney or furthers the Republican agenda has taken a serious dose of self-hate. There is no way any self-respecting and aware woman can sympathize with a party full of old white men and Stepford wives who want regulate women’s bodies with mandatory ultrasounds. Luckily, I’m not famous so Fox News won’t call my comments “offensive” and “vulgar” while supporting Todd Akin, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter

The Washington Post even went so far as to say that Longoria has started her own “war on women.” You gotta love the media. They take their job of polarizing America very seriously. Because not supporting Mittens sets women back. Riiiiiiiiight.

Eva, you’re alright.

Psy Shuts Down Seoul with Free Concert

Nothing funny today – just something incredible. Psy is seriously going to unite North and South Korea.

Download Video with Vixy.net | YouTube to MP3

My ears were ringing from just listening to the video – can you imagine what it was like to actually be there while 80,000 people sang in unison? That’s more people than on Staten Island! (…I think? Who cares!)

Who would have thought that a horse dance could inspire so much national pride? Amazing.

This free concert was Psy’s way of thanking his fans for putting him on the map. “Gangnam Style” is currently number one in the UK and number two in the US. “I did not get here because I was worthy of it. I’m here because of all of you. I’m just a fat man with two kids.”

I can’t think of anyone more deserving than this guy. His kids should be really proud of their old man.

Here’s to being one step closer to a united Korea.
